%22 in a URL
The percent-encoded double quote (").
Short answer
%22 is the percent-encoded double quotation mark ("). Quotes are not allowed in URLs as-is and they break HTML attributes, so they appear encoded, most often in URLs that carry JSON or an exact-match search phrase.
- Character
- "
- Percent-encoded
- %22
- Byte value
- 0x22 = 34
- RFC 3986 class
- unsafe
- UTF-8 bytes
- 1
Where you will see it
- JSON in query strings: filter=%7B%22status%22%3A%22open%22%7D.
- Exact-match search phrases: q=%22exact%20match%22.
- Output of every standard encoding function, which all encode the double quote.
What goes wrong
- %7B%22 decodes to {" and is the start of a JSON object. Decode the whole value to read the JSON.
- A raw double quote inside an HTML href can end the attribute early. Always encode quotes in URLs you write into HTML.
